![]() ![]() Stallone is really the best thing about this film. ![]() David Carradine does as well as he can with Frankenstein - it's hard to take a hero seriously when he looks like he's on his way to a S&M club - but top marks go to Sylvester Stallone who shows genuine comedy chops in his portrayal of Machine Gun Joe. The film's ghoulish humour goes a long way towards glossing over its story's inconsistencies (why, if everyone knows the racers score points by running down pedestrians, is anyone outside during the race) and blunting its nastier moments (in a darker film, the "euthanasia day" scene would probably have been unwatchable). Legend has it that producer Roger Corman's original treatment of this film was very serious in tone, so it's to his and director Paul Bartel's credit that they realised that the material would be best served as a dark comedy. ![]()
